Internship abroad

If you are lucky to take an internship abroad, you can be happy: you will be able not only master your skills, but also experience a different culture of business communication. Knowledge of a different culture will significantly help you in your further intercourse.

The Americans are individuals, they like to act independently, without the instructions of the boss. So they do not like people who always ask permission. If something is not forbidden, it is permitted! They are very mobile and take risks easily. The Americans are a bit rude; when they disagree with something, they simply tell about it. They are not interested in other cultures at all, they are sure that their nation is the best. Despite all this, citizens of America treat foreigners quite well.

The English are very conservative and calm. They are not used to start a conversation with strangers in trains, they prefer to read newspapers. When an Englishman does not agree with something, he can ridicule it in the manner characteristic only of this nation. Unlike Americans, dwellers of Foggy Albion do not like to hurry.

The Australian use English slang world in their speech, and it is not easy to understand their language without special training. The Australian are thought to be educated people and “dorks” at the same time. If you started talking to an Australian, nobody knows the result of this conversation – either you will be drinking together in a bar or you will fight with each other.

The Finns are very kind-hearted people suffering from inferiority complex. They call themselves slowcoaches and ignoramuses. The Finns like loneliness, so if you become acquainted with someone during your internship in Finland, you will have to wait for the letter for a very long time, if you even receive it.

The French believe that their nation is unique. They protect their language and their culture, they are a part of Europe, but the very different and the best one. If you think that the English language will help you to find the common language with the French, you are totally mistaken: in this country only national music is being broadcast. The French possess clear logic, they lack intuition. They are suspicious, obstinate, they think quickly but they do not like when they are being hurried.

The German’s discipline is not a legend. They are never late and watch carefully the observance of hierarchy. The Germans are simple-minded and they truly believe that all other people are the same.

The Italians are the most sociable Europeans. They adore both talking and listening. They discuss absolutely everything, starting with family problems and ending with politics. The Italians are expansive, even theatrical. They are not very sensitive, therefore they can easily hurt feelings of other people. The Italians are not only always (!) late, they never come in time. There is a special quota of being late, when nobody is offended: 20 minutes in Milan, half an hour in Rome, 45 minutes in the South of Italy. The same is about salary payment. It is quite all right when the salary is delayed for two months.

The Portuguese are very good speakers and writers. They value friendly connections and prefer to settle everything with the help of friends and acquaintances. The Portuguese pretend that understand the interlocutor, even if they understand absolutely nothing. They prove their demands in a roundabout way.

When the Russians are at a deadlock, they think that the best way is “An hour in the morning is worth two in the evening”. The Russians care for their reputation, status, respect for their nation, sometimes at the expense of other nations. They can be easily offended if someone speaks badly of Russian habits and traditions.

The unit of the Arabic society is a family. We used to value people according to their deeds, while the Arabs value them according to the social status. They do not like travelling. The Arabs are very merciful. They think that the weak should be protected and the needy should be fed and given clothes and shelter. That is why they are very hospitable.

The Japanese are not individuals, they just co-exist together with companies, firms and associations. The Japanese do not give orders, they simply say: “It would be good if this and this have been done” – and expect that everything will be done in time. The Japanese are very polite and they never lose face. Besides they never say “no”, though Japanese “yes” not always means “yes”.

The main Chinese values are modesty and tolerance, also decency. If an American who was caught doing a shabby act in New York can begin all over again in a week in California, the Chinese who lost his face will have to build up his reputation again not less than forty years in the same community, on the same working place and among the same people. When you are in China, you should remember: things that we treat as prejudices are reality for the Chinese that cannot be ignored.
