You really love your job? You’re crazy!

Sam appears on his working place before sunrise, in order to make everyone unaware how much time he overworks. Charles is always a volunteer to work during night shifts and to do all hands’ job – in order to feel his importance. Susan cannot refuse when she is asked to participate in voluntary projects, different social actions, wedding preparations, chorus singing, lectures and courses. Each of them is a member of society "Workaholics Anonymous" that functions in New York more than 20 years.

The course of psychological help is organized on the same principle as help for anonymous alcoholics. In order to get rid of maniacal passion for work, participants are to pass 12 stages. At the same time each of them has a right to keep a secret of their personality.

“Unlike other types of addiction, this one is not rejected by society, moreover, it is highly welcomed. People often boast of their working abilities and declare proudly: “I am a workaholic”. But their strength is quickly failing, workaholics drop out of the society, they become malicious, cynical and aggressive people who have a negative influence on the functioning of organization, in spite of great amount of work given to them.” – says Mike, a psychologist and a member of “Workaholics Anonymous”.

“Workaholics Anonymous” has not still counted the general number of its members, but, as the organizers tell, dozens of seminars take place not only in the USA, but also in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Great Britain. Furthermore every month its website sells about 100 copies of the book that tells about work of society and about the problem as a whole.

Doctors began to speak about workaholism as a psychological problem in the beginning of 1980s. At that time a financier and a school-teacher from New York founded a group resembling the association of anonymous alcoholics, but they were to struggle with work addiction. In “Workaholics Anonymous” workaholics are defined as people that are inclined to perfectionism, anxious people who find satisfaction only in work, who disregard their health and rest and oversaturate their life schedule. You do not need to have a permanent job to be a workaholic. It is enough for a person to busy himself with work to overcome the feeling of inferiority and become more self-assured.

However weekly seminars in New York City that can be called the cradle of workaholism gather about six persons in a week. This small amount of visitors arouses a joke that the most hopeless workaholics are too busy to attend trainings. Charles, the organizer of “Workaholics Anonymous”, has heard this joke millions of times. “People think that it is so funny, - he says. – That seems funny until you hear real stories. A lot of people whose life was destroyed by work came here”.

Unlike alcoholics who can trace their rehabilitation and count the days to keep themselves from alcoholic drinks, workaholics do not have a quantitative criterion that could help to realize the level of recovery.

“My boss forbade me to work more than 40 hours a week. But it was not enough for me. As a result, I began slipping to my working place at 5 a.m. on Sunday and left not to be noticed. I did not want my colleagues see me working so much.” – tells Sam, ex-manager of engineering projects in a big organization. A typical workaholic Sam was lucky: in “Workaholics Anonymous” he got rid of this baneful passion. “I do not rush to my work any more, I do everything according to my abilities, in order to save my mental health and my peace of mind, instead of trying to fulfil any project perfectly”, - he says.
